Synopsis Assignment 1

Into the Wild - Example Task

Synopsis: The film "Into the Wild" is based on the true story of Christopher McCandless. McCandless was a well-to-do twenty-something that graduated from Emory University, with the world and a money at his fingertips. McCandless stopped talking to his family, donated his savings ($24,000) and threw himself into the wild. With nothing but ten pounds of rice, a rifle, camping gear, a book on edible plant life, and a new name, he began a journey that would both begin, and end his life.

Reasons for making this novel a film:

The concept of the book itself can explain much about the reasons for creating a film about this "true story". The novel's appeal - to myself at least - stems from the main character doing something that we may or may not have thought about in our lifetime (I know I did): living a completely independent life in nature, the way we were born to. This very concept lends itself to debate: were we born to be a part of nature as Christopher was? Or were we born to live as we do in the modern world? Leaving a comfortable lifestyle of support and habit behind him, McCandless left the modern world (even left his name behind) to connect himself to something greater, nature itself. This is a strange and unique story that documents someone (a real person) that decided to just leave it all behind. For these reasons, the film itself would be able to depict the beauty and mystery of nature and our relationship with it, as human beings.
